New Normal, 2002

In the wake of 9/11, the American communal sense of security and refuge ruptured. Fear escalated throughout the nation. The seemingly disparate video images devoid of human presence are scenes from my daily travels. Appearing ordinary at first glance, an underlying tension punctures the surface calm. Beautiful in its luminosity with billowing smoke, the Sunoco refinery presents a paradox of potential danger as a terrorist target and as an environmental polluter. Death permeates the images, manifesting itself in a natural cycle and as a result of human intervention. The video addresses the "New Normal" in an age of consumerism, industry, and Homeland Security.
