Keep Moving! The Drive-Through Experience of “Aurora: Area 3”
December 2020
I went to Aurora: Area 3 in Dallas on opening weekend. Cars were lined up waiting to enter. This bodes well for Aurora, since the event is a fundraiser for Aurora’s Artist Relief Fund, dedicated to supporting local artists and vendors whose income has been affected by the pandemic.
The Horse as Witness and Metaphor: A Chat With Deborah Butterfield
November 2020
For the past 40 years, Deborah Butterfield has been creating large-scale sculptures of horses. She received her BA and MFA from UC Davis, and divides her time between her ranch in Bozeman, Montana and a studio in Hawaii. Her work is in many museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Currently her work Three Sorrows is on view at The Old Jail Art Center in Albany, Texas through January 30, 2020.
Local Art in the Show House: Kips Bay Does Dallas
October 2020
Normally, this type of event is too fancy-schmancy for my tastes. But when my friend invited me, three things about it caught my interest: the inclusion of Dallas-area artists’ work, the chance to see the inside of a $5.75 million house in Preston Hollow, and the fundraiser aspect, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club, Dwell with Dignity (a nonprofit that creates homes for families struggling with homelessness), and The Crystal Charity Ball, which supports children’s charities in Dallas.
Hansen & Cravens Find Their Way at The MAC, Dallas
June 2020
Finding Our Way, made visible through a camera lens is an exhibition and visual diary of two women’s journey in discovering their authentic selves against the backdrop of cultural upheaval during the second wave of feminism. I had the pleasure to receive a private tour of the exhibition with curator Rachel Rogerson at The MAC in Dallas on May 19, 2020.
An Interview with Hillerbrand + Magsamen About How to Survive the Coronavirus (One Device at a Time)
April 2020
Hillerbrand + Magsamen are a collaborative artistic family of four who live and work in Houston. I’ve followed their work for the past 15 years, and was thrilled to see their most recent exhibition at Heidi Vaughn Fine Art in Houston before the gallery temporarily closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If you haven’t watched their Five-Minute Tour video on Glasstire (also #1 pick on GT’s weekly Top Five), please do.
The Privacy World of Sue Anne Rische
February 2020
Sue Anne Rische was one of the first people I met when I moved to Dallas in 2011; it was during a great drought. My first impression of the area was bleak (it had not rained in almost a year), but Rische’s warm welcome, along with her intellect, artistic pursuits and unusual hobbies, drew me in. Rische is a Professor of Art at Collin College, Plano, and has exhibited locally and internationally, in Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, and England, among other places.
