A correspondence between Madame X and Mr. Michaelme.

During covid, I was very moved by Michael Anthony Garcia’s performance Huecos Chuecos 1: Carino Lamentado/Carino Suplicado.
The isolation and loneliness faced by so many during the pandemic exponentially impacted those who live alone. I asked Michael to collaborate with me on a postcard correspondence. The only conceptual framework given was to write about our experiences with beards and bearding. The resulting correspondence is a selection of the work spanning the last 11 months. MME’s postcards are hand-drawn and Madame X’s usually include a photograph or collage element. The cards are placed in glycine envelopes in a hand-made accordion book. The front and back are covered with a Japanese paper that obscures the portraits. Inspired by Fluxus and mail art, the project dissolves the line between art and life, while blurring fact and fiction.
